 Introduction (Youth Section)

Welcome to our section for Youth Athletics serving from School Year 2 through to School Year 11. Generally by the time our athletes are 15/16 years of age they are ready to train in the Senior ranks although this is still governed to some extent by distance and choice of terrain.

Revised Programme from September 2010

CLUB XC -  Is the name for our exciting new offering specifically for cross country. Aimed primarily at High & Upper School Athletes this starts from Saturday 4 September and will take place on a weekly basis except where there is a date clash with school or other cross country events e.g. LRAA County Championships on Saturday 23 January.

Our rendezvous point is car park of the Queens Head public house in Saddington which is a stones throw from the starting point a steady downhill path from the hilltop. At the bottom of Saddington valley we regroup before tackling the first and largest hill climb. After a brief respite and regrouping a more gradual and forgiving climb through arable land eventually brings us to the summit of Smeeton Gorse where another brief regroup allows us to take in the spectacular panorama over Charnwood Forest, The Welland Valley and the Northamptonshire Marches. The route now continues with the first sharp descent where over time you can develop your confidence in downhill running at speed. Next the route flattens out before the last two fields take us uphill again to the final regrouping point at the curtain gates outside Gumley.  The return route is an exact reversal meaning a tough ascent to the summit of Smeeton Gorse before a thrilling downhill stretch back into Saddington Vale.  On some weeks we will forsake the out and back route in favour of some hill reps. Club XC runs from September to March only

INDOOR SPORTSHALL - This is primarily aimed at primary school years athletes and will run from September to March. From October we are proud to be joining the inagural Leicestershire Sportshall League and so our weekly practice sessions will put us in good stead. Please return to this site in early September for confirmation of the venue and dates for the weekly Sportshall sessions. Please note that we are limiting the outdoor sessions for primary school athletes for this winter and that when the Sportshall sessions finish in March we will revert to outdoor sessions at Fleckney Recreation Ground for the spring and summer.

TRACK SESSIONS AT SAFFRON LANE STADIUM LEICESTER   - As is well known Saffron Lane is both popular and at certain times overscribed. We are however starting fortnightly sessions for both High & Upper School students plus seniors from Monday 13 September. Remaining dates for 2010 will be 4 and 18 October, 1, 15 & 29 November

ROAD SESSIONS FROM BEAUCHAMP COLLEGE OADBY - We strictly limit exposure to tarmac for younger athletes as bone density does not optimise until the later teens and therefore for those in their early teens we would only offer a maximum of a fortnightly session of 3 to 4 miles under strictly controlled conditions. Suitable sessions will be advertised in advance usually on non track weeks
