The Great Kibworth Run
In the headline Half Marathon event over the full 13 miles miles plus distance it was Harborough's Sean Fenwick who rewrote the record book returning a hugely impressive 1:12:41 over a minute clear of Stilton Striders Chris Southam in the runners up spot. Third place went to the defending champion Kibworth's Rob Pullen now a second claimer for Fleckney & Kibworth but running for his first claim club Leicester Owls.
The first lady home and fifth finisher overall was one of the counties outstanding female athletes Nicola Clay also of Stilton Striders in another highly regarded time of 1:19:44
. In the new team category there was an almighty battle between the local clubs and amid some confusion over the team criteria the Fleckney and Kibworth four of Steve Bishop, Dave Wheeler, Karl Beardall and Martin Pickles narrowly got the verdict over the Harborough quartet of Fenwick, Richard Bufton, Alan Hawkes and Ian Chick.
There was further team success for the Fleckney & Kibworth club when we secured the ladies team prize through their squad of Claire Beach, Tina McDonagh, Hannah Matts and Sarah Cripps. In the Third Marathon Suzanne Burgess underlined her rapid improvement by finishing as Third Lady just one second ahead of husbland Josh.
There were also impressive efforts by Linda Moss, Lucie Butwell and Stephen Durham. Both Lucie and Stephen have only started serious running this year so a big well done!
The quality of the performances was further sustained in the two mile Fun Run where some of the talented young athletes from the area where able to show their seniors the way home. Leading the way this year was 12 year old Leicester Owls starlet Stefan Ashman who added to his equally impressive victory in the recent Fleckney Carnival Fun Run by picking his way through the crowded course to cross the line in 17:44. Second place went to his clubmate Niall McSharry in 18:04 followed by another talented 12 year old Kibworth's Jonathan Monk of Leicester Coritianians in 18:13. Lorna Grubb was the first girl in 21:26 In the other age categories the winners were Age 8-11 1st boy James Hatton 18:40, 1st girl Emily Hollis 20:40 Age 7 and under 1st boy Kieran Ashman 22:57 1st Girl Jocelyn Parkes-Bowen 26:36 Kieran keep up the impressive record of the talented Ashman siblings by following his brother Josh the winner of the 7 and under category in 2005.
It was so pleasing to see lots of our younger runners getting out, there was complete family foursome from The Priors with Katrina, Saffron, Elaine and Stewart setting a great example. Sean McDonagh, Clarisse Bale, Jack Houlihan, Alice and Luke Brown all showed that they have more than a little of their parents talent
